Neil Crossland — Your Guide to Retiring Overseas

Straight answers to the questions I hear most often. No fluff, no corporate hedging.

3. How much does it actually cost to retire in Southeast Asia?

The honest answer is: far less than you think, but more than the £800/month myths you read on forums. A comfortable, secure retirement in Vietnam or Thailand typically costs between £1,200 and £2,500 per month for a couple — including a quality apartment, comprehensive health cover, dining out regularly, and travel. That same lifestyle in the UK would cost three to four times more. In our session, we build a personalised budget based on your specific circumstances, not generic estimates.

4. Is Southeast Asia safe? What about healthcare?

This is the question I hear most from people who have never lived abroad, and I understand why. The reality is that cities like Ho Chi Minh City, Chiang Mai, and Kuala Lumpur have world-class private hospitals — often with shorter waiting times and significantly lower costs than the NHS. Many expats actually receive better healthcare abroad than they did at home. As for safety, Southeast Asia’s major expat hubs are generally very safe for foreign residents. I live this reality every day in Ho Chi Minh City, and I’ll give you an honest, unvarnished assessment of each destination — not a tourist brochure version.

5. Do I need to speak the local language?

No. In the major expat hubs of Southeast Asia — Bangkok, Chiang Mai, Ho Chi Minh City, Hanoi, Kuala Lumpur, Penang — English is widely spoken in the areas where most Western retirees live, in hospitals, and in most service industries. You will encounter language barriers in day-to-day life, and learning a few phrases goes a long way, but you absolutely do not need to be fluent to live comfortably. I’ll be honest with you about where language is more of a challenge.

6. How long does it take to make the move?

Most of my clients take between 6 and 18 months from our first session to physically relocating. The timeline depends on your personal circumstances — pension arrangements, property in the UK, family considerations, and visa processing times. What I help you do is build a realistic, sequenced plan so nothing falls through the cracks. The people who rush it tend to regret it; the people who plan it properly tend to wonder why they didn’t do it sooner.

7. What exactly happens in a Retirement Clarity Session?

It’s a 90-minute Zoom call where we go deep on your specific situation: your finances, your health needs, your lifestyle priorities, and your timeline. Before the call, I’ll ask you to complete a short briefing document so we don’t waste time on basics. After the call, you receive a written summary report and a personalised action plan. You also get a recording of the session. My goal is that you leave with absolute clarity on your next steps — not a vague sense of direction.

8. Can my partner join the session?

Yes, and I actively encourage it. Retirement abroad is a life decision that affects both of you, and it’s far better to have both partners in the room than to have one person relay information afterwards. There is no additional charge for a partner joining the session.

9. I’ve already done a lot of research. Will this session still be useful?

Almost certainly yes — and here’s why. The problem most well-researched people have is not a lack of information; it’s too much conflicting information with no way to evaluate it. Forums are full of people who moved abroad on a budget and resent anyone who wants more comfort. YouTube is full of people selling courses. What I provide is a structured, professional framework to cut through the noise and apply the right information to your specific situation. The more research you’ve done, the more useful our session tends to be.

10. What if I decide Southeast Asia isn’t right for me after all?

Then I’ll tell you that. I have no financial incentive to push you towards any particular destination or decision. If, after our session, we both conclude that Southeast Asia doesn’t fit your health needs, family situation, or lifestyle preferences, I’d rather you know that now than find out after you’ve sold your house. Honest advice sometimes means telling people what they don’t want to hear. That’s what you’re paying for.
